What I Actually Use in My Greenhouse (And Why I’d Buy It Again)

One of the questions I hear most often is surprisingly simple:

“What do you actually use in your greenhouse?”

Not what I wish I had.

Not what someone on social media says I need.

Not the newest gadget that promises to grow perfect tomatoes.

People want to know what has truly earned a permanent place inside my greenhouse.

The truth is, my greenhouse wasn’t built overnight. It has slowly evolved over time through trial, error, and many afternoons spent learning from both my successes and my mistakes. Every season teaches me something new, and with each lesson I’ve discovered tools that genuinely make gardening easier, more productive, and far more enjoyable.

When I first built my greenhouse, I envisioned a place where vegetables could grow year-round. I never imagined it would also become a peaceful retreat—a place where I could slow down, quiet my mind, and reconnect with myself after a stressful day.

The tools I use today don’t just help my plants thrive.

They help me enjoy the experience of gardening.

If I were starting my greenhouse all over again tomorrow, these are the products I’d purchase first.

☀️ Cooling My Greenhouse

Without question, this was the biggest lesson I learned.

My greenhouse receives full afternoon sun, and during my first summer I quickly realized that opening the doors simply wasn’t enough. The temperature climbed so high that it became uncomfortable to work inside, and my plants were beginning to show signs of heat stress.

The single best investment I’ve made?

40% Shade Cloth

Installing a 40% shade cloth completely changed my greenhouse.

Almost immediately I noticed the temperature dropping by roughly 10–15 degrees, making it far more comfortable for both me and my plants. My tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, lettuce, spinach, cauliflower, and beans all responded beautifully.

I honestly wish I had installed it sooner.

I also use:

  • Shade cloth clips
  • A greenhouse circulation fan
  • Digital thermometer and hygrometer

Together these help me monitor conditions and prevent hot, stagnant air from building up.

🌱 Seed Starting Essentials

There is something incredibly rewarding about watching the very first seedling push through the soil.

To give my seeds the best possible start, I rely on a few simple tools every season.

My favorites include:

  • Seed starting trays
  • Humidity domes
  • Heat mats
  • Spray bottle
  • Plant labels

I like using humidity domes because they hold moisture exactly where it’s needed while allowing me to gradually introduce airflow through the ventilation openings.

Once my seedlings emerge, I remove the dome, move them under grow lights, and eventually transplant them into larger containers.

These few supplies dramatically improve germination while making seed starting feel organized instead of overwhelming.

💡 Grow Lights

Living in New York means our growing season doesn’t always cooperate.

Grow lights allow me to get a head start long before spring arrives.

I use them for:

  • Starting vegetables indoors
  • Growing herbs through winter
  • Keeping seedlings compact and healthy

Adding a simple outlet timer makes everything automatic, allowing my plants to receive consistent light every day without me constantly remembering to switch lights on and off.

🪴 My Favorite Growing Containers

One question I receive almost as often as “What do you grow?” is:

“Why do you use grow bags?”

The answer is simple.

They work.

Most of my vegetables grow inside 5-gallon fabric grow bags, including:

  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Peppers
  • Green beans
  • Strawberries

I love them because they:

  • Improve drainage
  • Prevent roots from circling
  • Warm quickly in spring
  • Are lightweight and easy to move
  • Maximize limited greenhouse space

If you’re gardening in a greenhouse, on a patio, or even a small deck, grow bags are one of the easiest ways to start growing vegetables.

💧 Watering Tools I Love

Watering may sound simple, but having the right equipment makes an enormous difference.

My favorite watering tools include:

  • Watering wand
  • Garden hose
  • Moisture meter
  • Water timer

The watering wand allows me to reach hanging baskets and the back corners of my greenhouse without disturbing young seedlings.

The moisture meter has also helped me avoid one of the biggest gardening mistakes:

Overwatering.

🍅 Tomato Growing Supplies

Tomatoes are one of my favorite greenhouse crops, but they definitely require a little extra support.

These supplies stay in my greenhouse all season long:

  • Tomato clips
  • Garden twine
  • Plant supports
  • Sharp pruning shears

Keeping tomato vines organized improves airflow, reduces disease, and makes harvesting much easier.

🌿 Harvest Tools

Harvest day is one of the most rewarding moments in gardening.

Instead of carrying handfuls of vegetables back to the house, I always keep a few harvesting tools nearby.

I love using:

  • Harvest basket
  • Garden scissors
  • Herb drying rack

It’s amazing how these simple tools make harvesting feel like a celebration instead of another chore.

🧹 Organization Makes Gardening More Enjoyable

One lesson I’ve learned over the years is that a tidy greenhouse is a peaceful greenhouse.

I use:

  • Storage bins
  • Seed organizer
  • Plant labels
  • Small baskets
  • Garden apron

Knowing exactly where everything belongs allows me to spend more time gardening and less time searching for supplies.

🌿 The Little Things That Make My Greenhouse Feel Like Home

These aren’t necessities.

But they may be my favorite part of my greenhouse.

I keep a comfortable garden stool nearby.

A Bluetooth speaker quietly plays music while I work.

My favorite coffee mug almost always finds its way inside during the early morning hours.

At night, soft lantern light creates an entirely different atmosphere.

These small touches remind me that gardening isn’t simply about producing vegetables.

It’s about creating a space that encourages you to slow down.

To breathe.

To notice.

To reconnect.

For me, that’s what Thyme & Tools has always been about.

Final Thoughts

People often assume successful gardening comes from owning the newest equipment or filling a greenhouse with expensive gadgets.

I’ve learned the opposite is true.

A handful of dependable tools used consistently will always outperform shelves full of products collecting dust.

Everything I’ve shared here has earned its place through real use, season after season.

Some items help my vegetables grow.

Others save me time.

A few simply make spending an afternoon in the greenhouse more enjoyable.

Every one of them reminds me that gardening isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up.

If you’re building your own greenhouse or just beginning your gardening journey, I hope this list helps you skip some of the trial and error I experienced along the way.

Start small.

Buy quality when you can.

Add tools as your garden grows.

Most importantly, create a space that invites you back tomorrow.

Because in the end, the greatest thing growing inside my greenhouse isn’t just tomatoes or peppers.

It’s peace.
